TL;DR: Generic AI writes emails like a reporter — summarizing facts and closing every loop immediately. In this episode, we show how to train your AI like a screenwriter using the Soap Opera Sequence, so your emails build tension and keep readers opening every message.
Be honest: when you see “August Newsletter” or “3 Tips for Productivity” in your inbox, do you feel excitement? No. You feel a burden. You delete it.
AI has made this worse. Because AI models are trained to be “helpful assistants,” their default mode is to summarize. They answer the question as quickly and politely as possible.
But humans do not binge-read summaries. Humans binge-read drama. You don’t watch Netflix to learn facts — you watch to feel tension and find out what happens next.
At Sandbox Media, we solve this through Ivy, our AI Email Specialist. But Ivy is just a code name for a methodology you can apply today: The Soap Opera Sequence.
The Psychology of the Open Loop
Standard AI emails fail because of the Zeigarnik Effect: the human brain remembers uncompleted tasks better than completed ones. When a narrative loop is opened but not closed, the brain creates tension and craves resolution.
TV shows use this by ending episodes at the moment of peak tension. Generic AI violates it by solving the problem in the first paragraph.
The “Reporter” AI (Generic)
“Here are the 3 ways to fix your estate planning. 1. Get a will. 2. Get a trust. 3. Update your beneficiaries. Hope this helps!”
The brain reads this, gets the answer, and deletes the email. Loop closed. Tension gone.
The “Screenwriter” AI (Trained)
“I thought a Will would save my family. Then I watched my brother scream at me in a parking lot. I realized I was missing the one document that actually matters…”
The brain asks: “What is the document?” The loop is open. The tension is high. The click is guaranteed.
To get an AI to write like this, you cannot use a simple prompt. You need to build an architecture.
Injection 1: The Instruction Set (The Plot Architecture)
The first step is to define the “Rules of the Genre.” We run our email bots on over 1,000 lines of custom instructions that override the AI’s natural desire to be helpful. We upload Knowledge Documents based on the Soap Opera Sequence (a framework popularized by Andre Chaperon).
The “In Media Res” Constraint
Standard AI starts with “I hope this email finds you well.” Trained AI must start in media res — Latin for “in the midst of things.” We force the AI to drop the reader into a moment of conflict.
Example: “The phone rang at 3 AM.”
The “Cliffhanger” Constraint
Standard AI summarizes the solution at the end of the email. Trained AI is forbidden from revealing the core solution in email #1. We force it to tease the reveal in email #2.
Example: “I finally found the fix, but it wasn’t what I expected. I’ll share the blueprint with you tomorrow.”
The “Kill the Wall” Constraint
Standard AI writes long, dense paragraphs. Trained AI treats every sentence as a visual hook. We enforce a “Max 3 Sentences per Paragraph” rule to ensure readability on mobile.
Injection 2: The Brand Blueprint (The Character)
The Instruction Set handles the Plot, but a script is nothing without a Character. You cannot write a Soap Opera without a Protagonist.
We utilize the Brand Blueprint — the “Digital Dossier” that tells the AI who it is pretending to be. For email, two sections are critical:
- The Origin Story: Why does this company exist? What was the low point before the solution was found? What was the epiphany?
- The Villain: In B2B, the villain is rarely a person — it’s usually a concept (“Complexity,” “Probate Court,” “Bad Data”). Defining the Villain gives the AI something to fight against, creating natural conflict.
Case Study: SafeHarbor Estate Planning
Estate Planning (Wills & Trusts) is arguably the most boring topic on earth. A generic AI will put people to sleep. A trained AI will keep them on the edge of their seats.
The Reporter (Generic AI)
Input: “Write an email about why people need a will.”
Output: “Subject: The Importance of Estate Planning. Dear [Name], I hope you are having a wonderful week… Did you know that 60% of Americans die without a will? Click here to learn more.”
Verdict: Weak hook. Summary of facts. No villain. Result: Delete.
The Screenwriter (Trained AI)
Blueprint Data: The founder watched two brothers get into a physical fight over a grandfather clock at their father’s funeral. The Villain: Family Conflict.
Output:
“Subject: The police arrived at the funeral.
It wasn’t about the house. It wasn’t about the money. It was about a $50 grandfather clock.
I stood there in the church parking lot and watched two brothers — men who had grown up in the same bedroom — threaten each other because their father hadn’t written down who got the antique clock.
Most people think a Will stops this. It doesn’t. To stop the fight before it starts, you need a different document entirely. I’ll tell you what it is tomorrow.”
Verdict: High drama hook. Open villain. Strong cliffhanger. Result: Must open next email.
How to Build This for Your Business
You do not need to be a creative writing expert. You just need to stop treating your AI like a search engine and start treating it like a specialized teammate.
- Step 1 — Define Your Origin Story: Write down the story of why you started your business. Focus on the struggle, not just the success. Upload this to your AI.
- Step 2 — Define Your Villain: What are you saving your customers from? Is it “Wasted Time”? “Risk”? Give the Villain a name.
- Step 3 — Use the Open Loop Constraint: Tell your AI: “You are FORBIDDEN from solving the core problem in this email. End by teasing a secret that will be revealed in the next message.”
The goal of an email sequence is not to dump information — it is to move the reader to the next step. Stop educating. Start entertaining.
